My Day, Monday: Eighty Days

My Day, Monday is my chance to let you know what I’m reading, writing, thinking about or…pretty much whatever is in my brain.

I’m just getting started on “Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland’s History-Making Race Around the World” by Matthew Goodman.

This adult, non-fiction offering looking back at a breathtaking around the world contest between late 19th century journalists Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland.

Bly first accepted the challenge of traveling around the world in the hopes of beating Phileas Fogg’s fictional eighty day journey around the world. Upon hearing of her efforts, a competing newspaper decides to send their top female journalist to race her, giving her only eight hours from hearing about the idea to embarking on the trip.

So far I’ve begun to learn a bit about the two women and their radically different childhoods. Goodman has explored some of their challenges in entering the field of journalism as women in this era (which reminded me a bit of “The Boston Girl” by Anita Diamant which I just finished.) Both have now set out on their trips, and I left Bly experiencing her first bout of seasickness as her boat hit the sea.

I’m anxious to see if this lives up to my initial optimism. Have any of you read this one yet?
